Biography: Dr Robin Chatterjee MBChB (Hons) MSc(SEM) MMedSci MRCGP (UK) DipSEM (UK&I) FFSEM (UK) PGCert US(MSK)
Dr Chatterjee is a Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine (SEM). He is the Lead Academy doctor at West Ham United FC and also works pitchside for London Broncos Rugby league team. He is the Co-Founder of Panacea Health (https://panacea-health.co.uk), which is a Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine clinic based in London. His NHS practise is based at St George’s NHS Foundation Trust. He is the general secretary of the British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine (BASEM)
He first became interested in SEM when he gained experience in hyperbaric medicine, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and chronic musculoskeletal pain management whilst working as an anaesthetist in Australia.
Previous roles have included working as a medical officer at Brentford FC academy, Tottenham Hotspur FC academy, London Marathon and World Triathlon Championships.
He has previously been the recipient of the Dr Vivien Lane Foundation Scholarship for outstanding research. He has also received an award for outstanding research from AXA PPP Healthcare and in 2017 had the third most read or downloaded research article in the British Journal Of General Practice for his work on GPs’ knowledge and confidence in delivering physical activity guidelines.
Research interests include unusual causes of musculoskeletal pain. As such he has published studies on ‘The effect of low vitamin D on chronic non-specific low back pain’ and ‘Factors affecting the release of alkaline phosphatase from osteoblast-like cells’. Other publications include work on chronic exertional compartment syndrome versus medial tibial stress syndrome, intersection syndrome, delivery of physical activity by personal trainers, parsonage turner syndrome, the Olympic healthcare legacy, plate tear in athletes, autonomic dysreflexia in the disabled athlete and the national physical activity framework UK. Outside of work he is a devoted husband and father, PADI certified diver and a proud Liverpool FC fan!
